Sunday School - Children / YouthSunday School Classes begin with 2 year-olds and continue through high school and into adulthood. (Childcare is available in the nursery for infants through children 3 years of age). The entire church family gathers for worship at 10:15 am in the Sanctuary on Sunday mornings (with the exception of the first Sunday of the month). Early in the service, usually following the opening hymn, the Lord's Prayer and Scripture reading, the children are invited to the front of the Sanctuary for a message designed especially for them. Then, 2 year-olds through senior high (high school) are dismissed to gather, accompanied by teachers, in classrooms located in the Education Building. On the first Sunday of each month, 2 year-olds through 6th grade will go directly to their Sunday School classrooms at 10:15 am. At 10:45, teachers will gather their class and take them to Fellowship Hall to join the rest of the congregation for the celebration of the Lord's Supper. It is expected that the children will be brought into the Sanctuary at about 10:50 am to be served as the first tables. Teachers will return with the children to the classroom to wait for parent pick-up or to let the child sign out at 11:15 am. Youth in 7th-12th grade remain in the Sanctuary for the entire worship service on these Sundays. During summer, age level classes do not meet. Children attend the first half of the 10:15 a.m. worship service and leave after the Children's Message for a broadly graded experience. MissionOne of the goals of our Sunday School program is that the children experience making a difference in the world by participating in local community outreach activities and global mission endeavors. To that end, our classes participate in season mission projects that have benefitted local, Chicago-area and global organizations such as St. Barbara's Food Pantry, Constance Morris House, Marcy-Newberry Association, ChildServ and The United Methodist Committee on Relief. Children younger than 3rd grade are not allowed to leave their Sunday school classroom without an adult (not an older sibling). The other was that infants through 2nd graders must be signed-out by an adult; 3rd through 6th graders, with the permission of their parents, may sign themselves out. *The Registration Letter outlines our full Safe Sanctuaries policy, including information about background checks for teachers. |
