1872-2022
150 Years of First United Methodist Church of LaGrange
id you know? In 1872 the first Methodist services in La Grange were held in the parlor of a home built by Isaac Poinier, about where the La Grange movie theater stands today. That was the beginning of FUMCLG. Our roots grew as we expanded out of the parlor, eventually owning three buildings for worship.
The old frame Cossitt school (in this photo), was purchased from the school board when they replaced it with a stone structure; the original Methodist church building at the corner of Madison and Cossitt was constructed in the 1890s. And our current sanctuary was built in 1950.
This year marks the 150th anniversary of the First United Methodist Church of La Grange. Throughout 2022 we are celebrating our history of commitment, worship, education, and service. As we honor our past, we see the DNA of who we are today and look to how we will continue that legacy into the next 150 years.
Together we will learn the stories of our forebears, our traditions, and our missions. We will see how many lives have been affected by the amazing work this congregation has done in our community of La Grange and the entire world. We will strengthen our appreciation of what we can do together and encourage future generations to add the next chapter of the story.
Our celebration will be bookended by two wonderful events.
On June 4, FUMCLG will march in the annual La Grange Pet Parade with a special bus decorated to celebrate the 150th anniversary. As one of the oldest area churches, predating the village’s incorporation by seven years, our long-lasting legacy and reputation in the community will certainly stand out to the crowd.
On November 20, we held a special 150th Anniversary Service and Celebration Meal. Check out the worship bulletin here, or the worship service recorded here. It was truly a joy-filled celebration!!
